Here is an article that covers it well, going into detail for the 7D.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"How and Why I Use the Back-Button AF\" href=\"http:\/\/learningdslr.com\/2011\/01\/how-and-why-i-use-the-back-button-af\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How and Why I Use the Back-Button AF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But basically on the 550D:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">On the Canon T2i [550D], press \u201cMenu\u201d and navigate to custom function IV-9: \u201cShutter\/AE lock button\u201d. Your options will be:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>0: AF\/AE lock<\/li>\n<li><strong>1: AE lock\/AF<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2: AF\/AF lock, no AE lock<\/li>\n<li>3: AE\/AF, no AE lock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>That&#8217;s &#8220;<span style=\"line-height: 24px;\">Custom Functions&#8221; under&nbsp;<\/span>the 3rd &nbsp;yellow spanner symbol, then scroll across to #9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/menuheadings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-219\" title=\"menuheadings\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/menuheadings.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"44\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marcus.howarth.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/menuheadings.jpg 399w, https:\/\/marcus.howarth.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/menuheadings-300x33.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Confusing to read initially, before the &#8220;\/&#8221; is what the shutter does (half way down) and behind the &#8220;\/&#8221; is what is controlled by the rear AE lock or star button.
